Should your brand quit social? Hell no...

Updated: Aug 20, 2019

Social media has been going for a while now – for enough time to collect and collate data about its effects on the individual and society. As it turns out, the negative effects. There are stories ad stats almost every week about social media making people, sad, stressed or depressed. That people obsess and become antisocial. There’s cyber bullying and petty bickering that provokes anxiety as well as fury. How many people do you know who have either abandoned social or are taking a break from social in an effort to preserve their sanity?

Even businesses are ditching social...albeit for different reasons.

JD Wetherspoon left social last year, a decision influenced by concerns regarding the "misuse of personal data" and "the addictive nature of social media"

Lush has just abandoned social because it’s "tired of fighting with algorithms" and does not want to "pay to appear" in newsfeeds.

These are two high profile brands but there have been others and there will be others.

It’s a risky move; here’s why:

That’s a hella lotta people to be missing out on conversing with via social media! Strategically, it seems detrimental to ignore this audience.

It’s important to use social ethically (have a think about what that might mean for your brand) and to understand the addictive nature of the internet and its billions of users – something to consider as part of your marketing strategy, perhaps? Algorithm changes are also annoying, from a marketing perspective – from all perspectives, really – but it makes the job dynamic, right?

Whether it’s brand awareness, customer service, sales, web traffic or all of the above that is your primary interest in social media, there is no doubt that when used well it is an amazing tool that can improve the quality of your business as well as your customer relationships.
