Visual content on social makes users pay attention

Visual marketing – if you think it’s optional; you’d be seriously wrong! According to new research by Content Marketing Platform Skyword, content with relevant photos or Infographics saw a 94% increase in page views versus content without images.

Writing about this very statistic, Brent Csutoras, Managing Partner at Search Engine Journal, says that the reason visual marketing campaigns are so successful is because humans are visual learners. So, when info is presented in visual format; it’s transmitted faster, comprehended quicker, remembered for longer and triggers emotion. Online trawlers (so, all of us – basically) have a short attention span, and the best way to make something stick is to use a picture. Some other crazy stats that reinforce this point (and will help you develop killer social media campaign) are as follows:

  • Coloured visuals increase people’s willingness to read content by 80 per cent.

  • When people hear information, they're likely to remember only 10 per cent of that information three days later. However, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people retained 65 per cent of the information three days later.

  • When information is relevant, readers spend more time looking at the images than the content.

  • Visual content is more than 40X more likely to be shared by users on social media.

  • Cisco projects that global internet traffic from videos will make up 82 per cent of all consumer internet traffic by 2021.

  • Using the word “video” in an email subject line boosts open rates by 19 per cent and click-through rates by 65 per cent.

  • Infographics can increase web traffic by up to 12 per cent.

  • People following directions with text and illustrations do 323 per cent better than people following directions without illustrations.

  • Tweets with images receive 150 per cent more retweets than tweets without images.

  • In an analysis of over 1 million articles, BuzzSumo found that articles with an image once every 75-100 words received double the social media shares as articles with fewer images.

  • Facebook posts with images see 2.3X more engagement than those without images.

  • There are more than 500 million Instagram users active every day.

  • More than 500 million Facebook users are watching videos on Facebook every day.

  • Snapchat users watch 10 billion videos per day.

  • Snapchat users share 9,000 photos per second.

  • Half of YouTube subscribers between the ages of 18 and 34 would drop whatever they were doing to watch a new video from their favourite channel.
